West Goshen prides itself on providing the best, high quality instruction for its’ students. Teachers participate in weekly professional development sessions, led by a master teacher and mentor teachers, to analyze student work/data to provide differentiated instruction for all their students.
Students take ownership in their own learning by setting individual goals and creating action plans with their teachers to reach their goals. When goals are reached, students are celebrated for their accomplishments.
West Goshen has a student leadership team that is lead by 4th and 5th graders. These students help make decisions for our school and take the lead on happenings at West Goshen. They lead the recycling program, do daily announcements, choose special spirit sticks for the school, plan special activities, and help greet parents at special evening events. The student leaders’ biggest responsibility is being a positive role model for our younger students at West Goshen. It is a responsibility they don’t take lightly. These leaders participate with the school counselor during lunch times weekly to discuss their leadership roles in the school.
West Goshen Elementary is a candidate school* for the Primary Years Programme. This school is pursuing authorization as an IB World School. These are schools that share a common philosophy—a commitment to high quality, challenging, international education that West Goshen Elementary believes is important for our students.
*Only schools authorized by the IB Organization can offer any of its four academic programmes: the Primary Years Programme (PYP), the Middle Years Programme (MYP), the Diploma Program (DP) or the Career-related Programme (CP). Candidate status gives no guarantee that authorization will be granted.
For further information about IB and its programmes, visit http:/www.ibo.org
Throughout the candidacy phase, West Goshen staff will work together to organize instruction of state standards into units of inquiry. The units will be organized to align with the district-created calendar for instruction of state standards. There will be a focus on developing inquiry-based learning opportunities, with students taking on more active roles in their own learning. The transdisciplinary units will be aligned K-5 and will include all subjects, including art, music, and P.E. In addition, all students at the school will begin instruction in foreign language instruction (Spanish).
Developing independent learners is another focus of the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program (IB PYP). Using the IB learner profiles and learner attitudes, staff will enable students to become more aware of how they can impact their own learning and take action with what they have learned. As fifth graders, students will develop individual inquiry projects, called Exhibitions, and will present them to the school and local community.
West Goshen has a PYP Coordinator who will provide guidance and support for staff and students in the implementation of the PYP. The coordinator is a member of the leadership team and will work closely with the Master and Mentor Teachers to integrate professional development and support into the existing TAP system at the school.
Goshen Community Schools uses Follett Destiny Software to manage the district media centers resources. Students can use the Destiny website to research what literature and media resources are available for all there classroom research needs.
